Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction is one of the most common types of laser treatments performed in the country.  It has been successful because they are simple treatments that take just a few minutes in the office and can provide a lifetime of hair reduction.  Patients can enjoy laser treatments in the face, body, legs, axillae, and bikini areas.  Men receive hair removal in the brow and back area commonly.  Learn about our Cutera Laser Hair Reduction treatments with one our consultants today!

What is laser hair reduction and how does it work?

  • Laser hair reduction is a laser that produces a beam of light that is absorbed into the skin to destroy the targeted hair follicle with heat.

What is a laser hair reduction treatment like?

  • Prior to your treatment, you should avoid tanning, plucking, waxing and electrolysis. As the laser is directed over the target area, you will feel a rubber-band like snap. Your laser technician uses a special wand to direct the laser and cooling device to keep you comfortable. There is no down time after a laser reduction treatment, but for some patients, redness and swelling can occur for the first few hours following the treatment.

How many treatments does it take?

  •  Since hair grows in cycles, and can only be removed during the growth phase, you will require an average of 6 treatment sessions in order to reduce unwanted hair. After your initial consultation, your laser technician will create a treatment schedule so that you receive optimal results.  The treatments are separated by 4-6 weeks in order to allow the hair cycle to adjust to the treatment.  You will be asked to discontinue all plucking and waxing during your laser treatment cycle.

Are there risks?

  • Some patients can develop blisters after the treatment. Other patients may obtain incomplete removal of the hair due the limitation of the laser to penetrate every singe follicle within your skin.  Your risks will be discussed specifically with your consultant.

Am I a candidate for laser hair reduction?

  • Most patients are good candidates for laser hair reduction.  Patients with very fair hair, white hair, and with a very fine hair are not ideal candidates.   Your consultant will discuss your hair type with respect to its candidacy for laser hair reduction.
